What is Bridge Builders
A service under the auspices of the Star of the Sea Province, Bridge Builders offers a truly unique volunteering experience. Envisioned by Br Chris Wills, this initiative seeks to rethink volunteering - not as individuals going abroad to “help,” but as a network of people willing to immerse themselves in a community, embrace its way of life, and contribute their skills where they are needed most.
Bridge Builders serves communities across Australia, Cambodia, Fiji, Timor-Leste, and several other nations, encompassing 11 countries within the Star of the Sea Province and beyond. Since 2012, through the Marist network Collaboration for Mission, International (CMI), hundreds of volunteers have partnered with local communities in more than 30 countries, forging bonds that endure.

Why Bridge Builders?
At Bridge Builders, our philosophy is simple: we believe in “joining in” rather than “helping.” Volunteers don’t come with ready-made solutions or to “fix” things. Instead, they step into the daily rhythm of a Marist community - sharing meals, stories, and challenges - working side by side to build trust and understanding.
For us, volunteering is a two-way exchange. Communities are empowered through collaboration, while volunteers gain a deeper appreciation of the world - its diversity, challenges, and strengths.
What this looks like in practice:
-
Joining In, Not Helping: Volunteers become part of community life, contributing through presence and participation.
-
Capacity Building: The focus is on strengthening existing resources - whether by teaching, mentoring, or sharing practical skills - so that communities remain strong and self-reliant once volunteers depart.
-
Faith and Family at the Heart: Living within a Marist community means prayer, reflection, and togetherness are woven into daily life. Volunteers are welcomed as part of this family and are invited to share fully in its spirit.

How It Works: Creating a Thoughtful Match
In line with our commitment to meaningful participation, we take great care to thoughtfully match each volunteer’s skills and interests with the needs of the community. A volunteer’s preferred destination is not the only factor in our decision; placements are always guided by the needs and readiness of the community itself. We ensure that every placement is community-driven, with the community fully engaged and genuinely open to welcoming a volunteer into their midst.
Here’s how we do it:
-
Express Your Interest: Share some information about yourself - your skills, your availability (3–6 months for short-term, 6–12 months for long-term), and your areas of passion such as education, health, or community development.
-
Invitation from the Community: Communities share their specific needs with us, then the Bridge Builders team then carefully matches your skills with these invitations, ensuring you are welcomed as a valued contributor. Throughout the process, we provide guidance and support to help you prepare thoroughly for your placement.
-
Guidance and Support: Throughout the process, we provide guidance and support to help you prepare thoroughly for your placement.
