Marists in the Pacific: Evolving paths, continuous dedication

Our story

On December 8, 2022, the Marist Brothers' Star of the Sea Province was formed, bringing 11 Pacific-Asia nations together, making it the largest and newest province in the worldwide Marist Institute.

The countries included are: Australia, Cambodia, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea (including the autonomous region of Bougainville), Timor-Leste, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu, Fiji, Kiribati, New Zealand, and Samoa.

The Star of the Sea Province represents a significant restructuring and consolidation of the Marist Brothers' presence in the Oceania region, providing a strategic opportunity to shape our future direction in the Pacific through enhanced teamwork and learning new ways of operating.

There are over 250 Brothers in the Province, supported by thousands of Marists, ranging in age from 24 to 99, and they reside in 51 communities that stretch from Christchurch in the south, to Phnom Penh in the north, and from Kiribati in the east, to Perth in the west.

Irrespective of their age or the roles they have, the Brothers' primary mission remains, as it always has been, to witness to the Gospel and make Jesus Christ known and loved, in the way of Mary – to young, old, and one another.

SOTS Marist Family

Spanning the vast and diverse Pacific Ocean, the SOTS Marists are the very soul of the Marist mission in this region. Inspired by the ideals of Marcellin Champagnat, the Marists follow in the way of Mary, assisting the Brothers in making Jesus Christ known and loved through education, social initiatives, and faith formation.

Working hand-in-hand with the Marist Brothers, these dedicated men and women bring Marcellin's charism to life amidst the rhythms of island life, infusing it with their unique, diverse cultures.

Whether teaching in Marist schools, leading youth ministry, spearheading social outreach, or nurturing a profound spiritual life centered on Mary's humility and simplicity, the Marists embody the values of family spirit, love of work, and an unwavering zeal to make the world a better place for all, especially for the next generation.
