From Adelaide to Tenaru: Sacred Heart students undertake Solomon Islands immersion

From 11–25 September, three staff members and 12 students from Sacred Heart College, Adelaide, travelled to the Solomon Islands for an immersion experience.

Immersions provide an opportunity for both visitors and host communities to learn from one another, gaining a deeper understanding of different cultures, ways of life and the challenges faced by communities.

The group stayed at the newly renovated Marist House, located across from St Joseph’s School Tenaru and the students and staff were warmly welcomed by the Brothers, lay Marists and local school community.

A key part of the immersion was the 'buddy system' where each Sacred Heart student was paired with a student of St Joseph's. The students spent time together in classes, participated in sports, followed their buddies through their daily routines and helped with various chores and activities.

The group also visited a number of other schools and community organisations, including a local village, Mercy School, Bishop Epalle School, Amoana Christian Academy and the DIVIT Rural Training Centre.

Through these experiences, the students were able to see different aspects of life in the Solomon Islands while building friendships and gaining a deeper appreciation of the local culture and community.
